The invention relates to a filter element for a filter press plate, comprising two filter zones and a passage for guiding a liquid to be filtered through, the two filter zones communicating with each other via said passage. According to the invention, the passage can be configured as a modular unit comprising at least two separate flange elements, every flange element having a passage opening for the liquid to the filtered and one of the two filter zones being arranged on each flange element. The filter element further comprises connecting means which interconnect the two flange elements when the passage openings are in alignment.
