The present teachings are directed towards methods of producing iron and titanium- containing nanoparticles by reducing iron and titanium-containing precursors with alkali or alkaline-earth metal-containing reducing agents in the presence of a suitable surfactant, and by the thermolysis of iron and t itanium-containing precursors without alkali or alkaline-earth metal-contain ing reducing agents present.
