A porous conductive sheet or strip is produced by depositing a layer of metal particles 15 from a hopper 20 on to a moving support 21a and allowing the metal particles to fall freely from this support through a heating zone 37 on to a second moving support 216 where the heated particles adhere to each other on cooling to form a porous metal layer. Either a composite strip comprising a base strip 12 of paper or a fibrous material with a porous coating 13 of metal particles 15 not exceeding 20 microns in diameter or a porous metal strip consisting of bonded metal particles without the base layer can be produced. The base strip 12 is fed on to the conveyer 21b and the metal particles which are heated by acetylene burners 38 and 39 are deposited on to the moving base, cooled by cooling coils 23 and the coated strip is coiled on roller 45. The metal strip without the base support is formed either by depositing the heated powder directly on to the conveyer 21b and stripping the metal strip from the conveyer or by coating the base strip 12 with metal powder and removing the base by burning or by disintegration. |
