A strapping tool comprising a tensioning mechanism 12 and a sealing mechanism 14 mounted on a frame 10 for tensioning and securing a strap 18 about a package 20, is provided with pivoted first and second gripping members 22 and 26, the first gripping member having a roughened, e.g. serrated surface, adapted to squeeze a free end of the strap against a foot provided on the frame when swung in a first direction (clockwise) and adapted to release the said strap end when swung in a second direction (anti-clockwise) and the second gripping member 26 having a roughened, e.g. serrated, surface adapted to squeeze the portion of the band or strap leading to the tensioning mechanism 12 against a smooth surface on the first gripping member when the second gripping member is swung in the said second direction (anticlockwise) and adapted to release the said strap portion when swung in said first direction. The gripping members are mounted on concentric shafts 28, 30, each of which carry a cam 40 or 42 for actuation by a handle 50 to move the gripping members in respective opposite directions of rotation to grip or release the respective strap portions, a spring 44, Fig. 6 (not shown), being provided between the respective shafts so that the gripping members are biased together towards the strap-gripping positions. Handle 50 is initially moved downwards to the dotted-line position thereby moving the first gripping member and then subsequently the second gripping member to their non-gripping positions, the consequential action being achieved by a cam 52 actuating the first gripping member prior to a cam 54 actuating the second gripping member through a push-rod 56. The strap portions are placed between the respective grippers, and the pressure on handle 50 released sufficiently so that spring 44 acts to urge gripper 22 to the gripping position whilst gripper 26 is retained in the non-gripping position. After tensioning the strap, pressure on handle 50 is released to permit gripper 26 to move to the gripping position. Tension can then be released in the strap portion between the grippers and the tensioning mechanism to permit sealing of the overlapped strap portions whilst the strap is held in a tensioned condition about the package.</p> |
