A can opener has a pair of operating elements 1, 2 pivotal with respect to one another. One of the operating elements 1 has a rotatable traction wheel 6 and the other one of the operating elements 2 has a cutting assembly 10. The operating elements 1, 2 pivot such that traction wheel 6 and cutter assembly 10 are moveable between an inoperative position and an operative position. In the inoperative position the traction wheel 6 and cutter assembly 10 are spaced from one another to an extent that the rim of the can to be opened is locatable between the traction wheel 6 and cutter assembly 10. In the operative position the traction wheel 6 and the cutter assembly 10 are in close proximity and engagable with the can to effect opening thereof. The cutter assembly 10 has an axle 11 engaged with the other one of the operating elements 2 at a first end and has a thread 13 at a second end. A rotatable circular cutting blade 20 is located on the axle 11 between the first and second ends and is held in place by a nut 18 engaged with the thread 13. A decorative cover 19 is located over the nut 18. The cover 19, nut 18 and cutting blade 20 are removable from the axle 11 so that the cutting blade 20 may be cleaned and/or replaced. |
