The method involves providing position measurement (M) of a control valve in a complete extreme close and open position of the valve using a measurement sensor. Acquisition conditions of a position value e.g. position ser point value, of the control valve is controlled. A reference value is acquired during all the duration of a complete close and open phase of the valve using a processing unit. A determination is made to check whether a set of measurement values are located in a value range around an extreme position of the valve. An independent claim is also included for a device for acquiring a reference value of a control valve to control a functional parameter of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
