<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character input system and a portable terminal device equipped with the system, specifically a portable telephone set which can attain a character input in a short period of time with fewer operation even only with one finger. <P>SOLUTION: The input system is provided with: a touch panel 6 for detecting a pressed position and transmitting it as position information; a CPU 9 as a processing means for receiving the position information, specifying one character by operation, and transmitting the character as character information; and a display part 5 for receiving the character information to display a specified character.
