PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic carrier dispersion efficiently isolating a nucleic acid from a biospecimen, a whole blood specimen or a gel carrier after electrophoresis and to provide a method for the automated isolation of the nucleic acids. SOLUTION: A nucleic acid binding magnetic carrier dispersion (L) containing an activation agent (A) having a cyclic quaternary ammonium group (a) containing a nitrogen atom constituting the quaternary ammonium group as the constituent atom of the ring and bonded to the surface of iron oxide fine particles (P) through a covalent bond (c), and obtained by dispersing a nucleic acid binding magnetic carrier (C) composed of the iron oxide fine particles (P) covered with the activation agent (A) in an aqueous dispersion medium (S). The nucleic acid isolation method contains a step to mix the nucleic acid binding magnetic carrier dispersion (L) with a specimen containing nucleic acids and recover the complex of the nucleic acid and the nucleic acid binding magnetic carrier (C) by magnetic force.
