<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an oxygen sensor element having a short activation time and high response. <P>SOLUTION: The oxygen sensor element includes: a solid electrolyte body 10 provided with a reference gas chamber 18 for keeping a heater 19 inserted; a measuring electrode 11, and a reference electrode 12. The oxygen sensor element has a contact portion 100 that includes a region of contact between an inner surface 102 and the heater 19 and an opposed region including an outer surface 101, and the measuring electrode 11 is formed so as to include at least part of the contact portion 100. The oxygen sensor element has a contact surface 13 for making a contact with a gas to be measured, and the contact surface 13 extends so as to fall within a range of length L from an element tip 14. At least a part of the contact portion 100 is located so as to fall within a range of length 0.4L from the element tip 14.
