PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a non-asbestos friction material that has a supressed decrease in friction coefficient, excellent stability of the friction coefficient and lowered counterpart-attacking property in a high temperature range. SOLUTION: The non-asbestos friction material comprises the aggregate fiber made of a metal wire, an organic fiber and a binding material. The metal fiber constituting the aggregation fiber has a hardness of 85 to 145 Hv, a tensile strength of 400 to 600 N/mm<SP>2</SP>, an elongation of 20 to 49%, a melting point of not less than 1,450°C. After high temperature friction, the friction deterioration phase is formed on the surface of the friction material in a depth of not more than 200μm from the surface and the diameter of the fiber included in the friction deterioration phase is 100 to 20% of that before the high temperature friction. The non-asbestos friction material includes the high temperature lubricating fiber made of the metal fiber that has a hardness of not more than 80 Hv, a tensile strength of 150 to 400 N/mm<SP>2</SP>, an elongation of not less than 10%, and a melting point of 700 to 1,100°C. The aggregate function value and the hardness function value of the aggregate fiber and/or the high temperature lubrication fiber are each not less than 30 and not more than 10.
