A microchip monitoring system and method

A microchip monitoring system (10) that monitors the status and/or location of a person, animal or asset carrying a small, discrete microchip (12). The microchip monitoring system (10) generally includes a microchip (12) and a portable communications device (14) both attached to the object being monitored, a communications device (16) coupled to the portable communications device (14) via a local area link, a wide area network (18) and a system back-end (20). The portable communications device (14) acquires electronic information from the microchip (12) and then conveys that information to the system back-end (20) via the local area link and the wide area network (18). This allows the system back-end (20) to monitor the status and/or location of one or more microchips (12) without the monitored objects having to carry cumbersome communications hardware.
