<p>A method and apparatus for displaying a menu on a display unit of a portable device having an input unit such as a jog input unit freely movable in multiple directions are provided. After the input unit is pressed, a display unit displays a reference point and first depth menu items at positions distributed around the reference point. Subsequently, after the input unit is moved in a first direction, a first depth menu item corresponding to the first direction is activated. The display unit may then display second depth menu items of the activated first depth menu item at positions that are either distributed around the activated first depth menu item, or alternatively, at positions to which the first depth menu items are allocated. After the input unit is moved in a second direction, a second depth menu item corresponding to the second direction may be activated.
