A method of controlling tracking area (e.g. location area (GSM) or routing area (GPRS/UTRAN)) signalling within a cellular mobile radio communications network comprises determining if a mobile radio communications device is stationary and, in the network, assigning a tracking area and/or an equivalent tracking area list to the mobile radio communications device responsive to an indication that the mobile radio communications device is stationary. The mobile radio communications device may be considered stationary if it is determined that the device has not changed cell for the duration of a periodic tracking area update timer. Thus, problems of paging overload when a mobile device is stationary within a larger tracking area may be overcome. |
