An audio outputting apparatus of a portable terminal and a method thereof are provided to selectively perform the output of directional sound and non-directional sound. An audio outputting apparatus(200) comprises the followings: a controller(100) which produces control signals different according to the selection of a user; a switching unit which transmits audio signals to the first path or the second path; an ultrasonic wave generation module(20) which is located at the first path to produces the directional sound; an audio amplifier which is located at the second path to amplify the audio signal; and a speaker unit which converts the signal outputted from the ultrasonic wave generation module or the audio amplifier into air pressure waves and outputs the pressure waves.
