[Also in Division C1] Gas is extracted from molten metal by at least partially immersing therein a porous refractory body to which suction is applied; any unimmersed part of the body may be given an impermeable surface as by glazing. The process is particularly applicable to a glass manufacturing process in which glass is brought into contact with the surface of the metal bath, and the invention includes apparatus for glass manufacture comprising a tank of molten metal with which the glass is brought into contact, the bath having at least partially immersed in it a porous refractory body connected to a vacuum pump. As illustrated a ribbon of glass 2 flows in the arrowed direction across the bath 1, and suction heads 7 are partially immersed in the marginal areas of the bath 3, 4 and are connected to suction pumps by lines 10. Alternatively the suction heads may extend beneath the glass ribbon.</p> |
