A copolymer of maleic anhydride and a C 2-4 olefin or a C 1-3 alkyl vinyl ether is reacted with a C 1-8 linear primary alcohol, C 5-8 branched chain primary alcohol or a C 6-8 secondary alcohol by a process wherein the reaction mixture contains 0-5-1-1 molecular proportions of alcohol per anhydride group, additionally there is present 0'5 - 2-0 molecular proportions of isopropanol per maleic anhydride group, the reaction is carried out at superatmospheric pressure at a temperature at least 2‹ C. above the atmospheric boiling point of the reaction mixture but below the temperature where substantial product degradation occurs.
