The laser device (1) has a connection (2) for a laser fiber (3) for coupling the laser light in the laser fiber and a control for operating the lasers depending on the identification code assigned to laser fiber. The control aligns the identification code (8) assigned to the laser fiber with an identification code (7) assigned to the laser device. The laser is switched on only when the alignment results that the laser fiber is exclusively dedicated for the individual laser device. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating the laser device.
