PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication device and a communication method which can prevent a malfunction or the like and can expand a coexistence control range. SOLUTION: A communication device performing data communication through a power line by which AC voltage is supplied has a detecting portion detecting a zero cross point of the AC voltage supplied from the power line, a control signal transmitting portion transmitting a coexistence control signal, to the power line, including information required to enable a plurality of power lines to coexist by the communication device using a different communication method in a first coexistence control range having a start point at a timing based on the zero cross point detected by the detection portion and a finish point between the start point and the next start point, and in a second coexistence control range arranged in a range different from the first coexistence control range, and a control signal reception portion receiving the coexistence control signal, from the power line, included in the first and second coexistence control ranges.
