<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a telephone system of which the confidentiality of communication is enhanced by enabling a user to recognize a security level providable by the terminal of the opposite party before origination, and a communication terminal. <P>SOLUTION: In the telephone system having a click-to-dial function, a user terminal previously transmits a subscription request for subscribing to presence of another terminal to a presence server 2. Then, each time the presence of the other terminal is updated, the update is notified to the subscription request requesting terminal, and the user terminal locally manages the presence of the terminal of the opposite party in a telephone book database.
