The invention relates to a device for grinding and comminuting material to be ground and to a method for grinding and comminuting grinding material, in which the material to be ground is obtained by the exertion of force of at least one rotating grinding element (2) onto the material to be ground. In order to provide a device and method which are more productive and rentable compared to the prior art, the invention proposes that the device comprises a grinding body (1) with an axially-symmetrical cavity in which a rotatable drive shaft (4) is arranged on the symmetrical axis thereof, said drive shaft (4) being connected to at least one support element with at least one axially-symmetrical grinding element (2) that is arranged in the axially-symmetrical cavity and whose symmetrical axis is oriented parallel to the symmetrical axis of the grinding body (1). According to the invention, the at least one grinding element (2) is freely rotatable about its own symmetrical axis and is mounted in the support elements in an exclusively radial flexible manner. The grinding and comminuting forces generated by the grinding element (2) are only caused by a driving torque acting on the grinding element (2) and by a regular centrifugal force of the rotating grinding element (2), which is concentrated on a small contact surface.
