<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for hardening a peripheral surface of a material to be hardened which dispense with manufacture of an exclusive heating and cooling source for each large material to be hardened and can prevent the occurrence of non-hardened layer or hardening crack caused by tempering of a portion already formed with the quench hardened layer in the material to be hardened, and achieve improvement in the strength. <P>SOLUTION: The peripheral surface 2 of the material 1 to be hardened is hardened by: setting the peripheral directional necessary position on the outer peripheral surface 2 in the material 1 to be hardened as the starting point S; setting the peripheral directional necessary position on the outer peripheral surface 2 of the material 1 to be hardened, separated from the starting point S as a completing point E; moving one side of one pair of dividable heating and cooling sources 3A and 3B for hardening toward the completing point E from the starting point S along one side of course copying the outer peripheral surface 2 of the material 1 to be hardened and at the same time moving the other side of the heating and cooling sources 3A and 3B along the other course copying the outer peripheral surface 2 of the material 1 to be hardened from the starting point S toward the completing point E; and unifying the heating and cooling sources 3A and 3B at the completing point E. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT</p> |
