PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical semiconductor device that can inhibit laser oscillation in a wavelength except a desired wavelength, and to provide a method of controlling the same. SOLUTION: The optical semiconductor device (200) includes a waveguide and a refractive index control portion. The waveguide has first segments (31), second segments (32), and a plurality of third segments. The first segment (31) includes: a region that includes a diffraction grating; and another region serving as a space region combined to the region. The second segment (32) includes: a region that includes the diffraction grating; and another region serving as the space region combined to the region, and the length of the second segment is different from that of the first segment. The third segment includes: a region that includes the diffraction grating; and another region serving as the space region combined to the region, and the length of the third segment is expressed by following expression (1) L3=L1+(L2-L1)×K1 (wherein, K1 satisfies the relation of 0.3≤K1≤0.7; L1 is a length of the first segment; L2 is a length of the second segment; and L3 is a length of the third segment).
