<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which reduces cost, and improves display quality such as a contrast ratio, viewing angle characteristics, viewing angle characteristics of colors, and so on. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has: a pair of transparent electrodes 22, 28 having alignment layers 24 which have been subjected to alignment treatment on their surfaces, and facing each other with a predetermined gap; a liquid crystal layer 26, a pair of upper and lower glass substrates 20, 30; a pair of retardation plates 18; and a pair of polarizing plates 16, wherein: a ratio d/p of thickness d of the liquid crystal layer to its chiral pitch p is 0.4-0.8; a birefringence Δn of the liquid crystal layer is 0.13-0.08; thickness d of the liquid crystal layer is 3.0-6.0 μm; a twist angle of liquid crystal molecules aligned in a helix is 90-270°; a rubbing angle θ<SB>r</SB>of the lower side glass substrate is 45-135°; an absorption axis angle θLpol of the lower side polarizing plate is 42-48° with respect to the rubbing angle θ<SB>r</SB>; and a pretilt angle θp of a liquid crystal molecule existing on an interface between the lower side transparent electrode and the liquid crystal layer is 80-89° with respect to the glass substrate surface. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
