PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance a computation speed for position detection, in a robot position detection system used for an underfloor inspection system or the like. SOLUTION: A robot 10 of the position detection system has a traveling body 11, a camera 12 mounted turnably on the traveling body 11, and a range finder 13 for measuring distances to a fixed object facing the robot along a horizontal direction, in a plurality of directions. A display 22 of a remote controller 20 displays an image from the camera 12, and displays a map based on map data containing positional information of the fixed object. A personal computer 21 of the remote controller 20 assigns a search area in the map displayed on the display 22, computes a current robot position, based on measured distance information in the plurality of directions from the range finder 13 and the map data, provided that the current robot position located within the search area, and displays the robot position on the display 22.
