PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form scaleable characters constituting a font database by forming character codes, character models, local dimensions, and segment descriptors. SOLUTION: A characters is selected from a set of characters stored in the font database and a character code is assigned (1310), a character outline of the character is formed (1322), a segment end point in a character model obtained with respect to the character is determined by using the character outline (1330), local dimensions with respect to the corresponding association of the character model are measured (1340), a segment description relating to each shape segment of the character outline is determined (1350), the operation for the remaining characters is repeated (1360), overall dimensions applicable to the set of one or more characters are determined (1372) to form the character code, the character model, local dimensions, and the segment descriptor for each character together with the overall dimensions.
