PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine which enables a user to perform sewing operations at a desired position. SOLUTION: A sewing machine 1 comprises a sewing machine body 2, including a needle up-and-down motion mechanism for moving a sewing needle up and down to sew a workpiece and a motor for driving the needle up-and-down motion mechanism, and a control unit for controlling the drive of the motor. The sewing machine 1 is also provided with an operating device 4 which can be electrically connected with the control unit and detachably attached to an optional point on the sewing machine surface and is designed to give an order to the control unit to turn on or off the motor.
