PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenol novolak resin having, in combination, low melt viscosity, high glass transition temperature, low hygroscopicity, high adhesivity, high heat resistance and high hardness, and especially being excellent in high hardness, and to provide a method for producing the same, and to provide a curing agent for an epoxy resin composition, and to provide a cured product of the epoxy resin composition. SOLUTION: The phenol novolak resin is such that a trialkoxysilicon group-bearing hydrocarbon group is directly bound to an aromatic ring, wherein the alkyl groups in the trialkoxysilicon group are 1-6C alkyl groups and may be the same as or different from one another. The method for producing the phenol novolak resin comprises conducting a reaction between a phenol novolak resin having hydroxy groups bound to the ring and a trialkoxysilicon group-bearing silicon compound in the presence of a platinum catalyst. The curing agent for an epoxy resin composition containing the above phenol novolak resin, and the cured product obtained by curing the above epoxy resin composition, are also provided, respectively.
