A motor vehicle having a safety steering arrangement comprises a steering shaft 4 rotatably guided in a housing 5 and capable of axial displacement with respect to the housing 5, the shaft 4 being provided at its upper end with mounting means, e.g. a flange 8, for a hollow deformable member 2 which is axially and laterally deformable relative to the shaft 4, by means of which a steering wheel 1 is connected to shaft 4, wherein the region of the shaft between the upper end of the housing 5 and the mounting means for the member 2 is surrounded by an axially guided deformation sleeve 7a which is deformed when the steering wheel 1 and the housing 5 are displaced towards each other in the axial direction of the shaft 4, the sleeve 7a co-operating between an abutment 6 provided at the upper end of the housing 5 and the mounting means and being subjected only to stresses acting in the axial direction of the steering shaft, the distance between the abutment 6 and the mounting means being greater than the undeformed length of the deformation sleeve 7a. The deformable member 2 and sleeve 7a are mounted on a flange 8 which is located on the shaft 4 by means of a collar 3 which is secured on the shaft 4 by a nut 9. The end of the sleeve 7a remote from the steering wheel 1 is opposite abutment 6 on the housing 5 which is secured to the vehicle body by a clamping arrangement 10. The collar 3 may be tapered to fit a tapered end of the shaft 4 or may be cylindrical and welded to the cylindrical end of the shaft 4. |
