An unsaturated liquid polymer or copolymer of a diene is reacted with from 1 to 10 mole per cent of an organic polyhydrosulphide in the presence of a free radical initiator or of an irradiation source. Specified dienes are butadiene, isoprene, piperylene (cis or trans), cyclopentadiene and the hexadienes; these may be copolymerized with ethylene, propylene, butene-1, the pentenes, cyclopentene, cyclohexene, styrene, vinyl toluene, methyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and acrylonitrile. Specified polyhydrosulphides are 1,2-ethanedithiol, 1,3-propanedithiol, tetramethylenedithiol, hexamethylenedithiol, the cyclohexanedithiols, 2,3-dimercaptopropanol-1, dithiomalonic and dithioterephthalic acid, alpha, alpha1, dimercaptoxylene and o, m and p-phenylenedithiols. Specified initiators are di-tertiary butyl, benzoyl, di-cumyl, and acetyl peroxides, tertiary butyl hydroperoxide and azo-bis-isobutyronitrile. The reaction including the chemical initiator may take place at 120 DEG to 350 DEG F. |
