A record/playback method and apparatus are provided to set up stable tilt condition of the lens and a recording medium in the entire region of the recording medium in consideration of the surface state of the actual recording medium. A record/playback apparatus comprises a light source(10), a lens unit(50), a gap error signal detection unit(70,80), and a controller(90). A record/playback method includes a step for changing tilt condition between the lens unit and a recording medium(200) and detecting gap error signal for every changed tilt condition, and a step for determining the final tilt condition by comparing gap error signals.
