<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sealing material for an optical element that can produce a cured product excellent in transparency, crack resistance and heat resistance and to provide a sealed optical element. <P>SOLUTION: The sealing material for an optical element comprises as a major component a compound with a ladder-type structure which has a repeating unit represented by formula (A) in the molecule, the compound being produced by condensing a compound (1) represented by the formula: R<SP>1</SP>Si(OR<SP>3</SP>)<SB>p</SB>(X<SP>1</SP>)<SB>3-p</SB>and a compound (2) represented by the formula: R<SP>2</SP>Si(OR<SP>4</SP>)<SB>q</SB>(X<SP>2</SP>)<SB>3-q</SB>in a ratio (by mole) of the compound (1) to the compound (2) of 1:9 to 10:0 in the presence of a phosphoric acid catalyst.
