PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of feeding a document without image deterioration during high-resolution scanning and also feeding the document without any decrease in throughput during low-resolution scanning. SOLUTION: When read resolution is low, a clutch C cuts off driving power from a motor 2 to a feed roller 1 until a tail end of a precedent document 6 passes by a sensor P2 to let a following document 6' stay at the position of the feed roller 1, and the following document 6' begins to be fed once the tail end of the precedent document 6 passes by the sensor P2. When the read resolution is low, the clutch C cuts off the driving power from the motor 2 to the feed roller 1 until an image read of the document 6 is completed to let the following document 6' stay at the position of the feed roller 1, and the clutch C is connected once the image read of the precedent document 6 is completed to start feeding the following document 6'.
