This invention provides oligomeric hydrogen phosphonates represented by t he formula (I) where R is an alkyl group having one to about six carbon atom s; R' is a linear or branched hydrocarbylene group or an oxygen-containing h ydrocarbylene group having two to about twenty carbon atoms or a hydrocarbyl ene group having at least one cycloaliphatic or aromatic ring, where at leas t one of R' is a linear or branched hydrocarbylene group or an oxygen-contai ning hydrocarbylene group and at least one of R' is a hydrocarbylene group h aving at least one cycloaliphatic or aromatic ring; and n is a number from 2 to about 20. Also provided are processes for making these oligomeric hydrog en phosphonates, oligomeric organophosphonate compositions, and processes fo r making these oligomeric organophosphonate compositions.
