PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide 4,4'''-dihydroxy-P-quarterphenyls useful as a raw material for a photoresist, etc., of liquid crystal display elements, semiconductors or the like, and a raw material for synthetic resins such as liquid crystalline polyester, polycarbonate or polyurethane, particularly excellent in liquid crystalline properties and simultaneously improved in other characteristics. SOLUTION: The 4,4'''-dihydroxy-P-quarterphenyls represented by general formula (1) (wherein R is alkyl; and n is 1, 2 or 3) are produced by dehydrogenating 4,4'-dihydroxyphenyl-bicyclohexenes in the presence of a catalyst.
