The invention relates to a method and a device for adjusting the encoding flowrate of video image sequences relative to a target flowrate (T_c), wherein the images (F_k) are subdivided into areas to be encoded (F_kj), the method comprising discriminating (A) among the areas (F_kj) the encoding complexity (C_j) of each area, sorting (B) the areas to be encoded (F_kj) according to a predetermined complexity order, successively encoding (C) each area (F_kj) based on a decreasing complexity order while successively minimising the encoding estimated error of each area (F_kj), the final size of each image relative to the target size (T_c) and the flowrate of a sequence of video images. The invention can be used for the video encoding of images in video sequences, in particular for network video monitoring.
