PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copy machine using a multi-beam optical system capable of detecting malfunction of, for example, a galvano-mirror and continuing image formation without turning off the apparatus. SOLUTION: A beam light position detection device 38 detects the passage position of the beam light, which is lead onto a photosensitive drum, in a sub-scanning direction. A plurality of galvano-mirrors 33a to 33d deflect the passage positions of a plurality of rays of beam light on the photosensitive drum. A main control unit 51 detects occurrence of malfunction in the galvano-mirrors 33a to 33d based on detection signals of a beam light position detection device 38. When occurrence of malfunction in any of the galvano-mirrors 33a to 33d is detected, the main control unit 51 stops the light emitting operation of the laser oscillator 31a to 31d corresponding to the galvano-mirror in which the malfunction occurs and continues an image formation operation by the operation of the remaining normal galvano-mirrors and the laser oscillators corresponding to them.
