The transmission (10) has an intermediate shaft (60), and planetary gear sets (14-20). An interconnecting shaft (42) continuously interconnects a sun gear member (14A) of the gear set (14) with a transmission housing (50). An interconnecting shaft (44) continuously interconnects a planet gear carrier member (14B) of the gear set (20) with a ring gear member (14C) of the gear set (16). Torque transmitting devices i.e. clutches (26-32) are engageable to establish eight forward speed ratios and a reverse speed ratio between an input shaft (12) and an output shaft (22).
