PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent liquid-crystalline medium having a high specific resistance and stability at a very low temperature. SOLUTION: The invention relates to the liquid-crystalline medium based on a mixture of polar compounds having negative dielectric anisotropy, which contains at least one compound of formula I and at least one compound of formula I<SP>*</SP>, and relates to an electrooptical display especially provided with a passive matrix addressing based on ECB (electrically controlled birefringence) effects.
