Modulation of inflammatory and immune responses in the treatment of inflammation using substituted heterocyclic compounds

Compounds of the formula (I) below: wherein X is a covalent bond, methylene or ethylene, R is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, vinyl, n-propyl, isopropy; or acetyl may be used to treat inflammatory diseases such as arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis, arthritis, psoriasis and ankylosing spondylitis. The compounds have been found to be active in modulating the levels of KLF2 in the body. Also disclosed are medical devices comprising such compounds, for example stents, cathaters and guidewires. Further disclosed is a method for assessing the response in a patient to a compound of the formula above which involves assessment of KLF2 expression levels in a patient both before and after treatment with the above compound and comparing the two results. Also disclosed is a method of identifying genes whose expression is amenable to modulation by the above compounds.
