The compositions comprises (i) a finely divided adsorbent selected from calcium silicate, particulate silicas talc, diatomaceous earth, charcoal and volcanic ash having a pH >=8, a surface area of 90-200 m2/g and an adsorptive capacity >=50 wt.% of water, and (iii) uniformly adsorbed on the adsorbent an aqs. soln-having a pH >=8 and contg. 0.01 to 6 wt.% of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal clorite, the soln. being adsorbed on the adsorbent in proportion equal to 100-60000 ppm of chlorine dioxide based on wt. of adsorbent. Pref. the adsorbent is calcium silicate and the aqs. soln. contains ClO2 dissolved in a conc. >= 40,000 ppm and is stabilized with an alkaline peroxygen cpd. The comps. will yield gaseous ClO2 upon acidification to a pH6, pref. using dry acidifying agents such as hydrated citric acid or FeCl3 adsorbed on a silicate. The compsn. are used for preserving fruit and vegetables being stored or shipped or as deodorizers. |
