PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly convenient portable electronic apparatus such that a user who operates the portable electronic apparatus having a large-screen display function and a small-screen display function feels neither a sense of incompatibility nor inconvenience when operating it. SOLUTION: The portable electronic apparatus has a first housing and a second housing. The first housing includes a control unit, a display unit having a first display area and a second display area, a first back light, a second back light, and a detection unit which detects whether the first housing is stored. When the first housing is stored, only the first display part is exposed. The second housing includes an operation unit connected to the control unit and a release button for placing a release mechanism in operation. Once a state wherein the first housing is stored is detected, the control unit drives the first display area and turns on the first back light. When the first housing is pushed out through the operation of the release mechanism, the control unit drives the first display area and second display area and turns on the first back light and second back light.
