PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element holding device capable of absorbing deformation of a lens under its own weight, and a variation when the optical element is held due to a small amount of inclination or roughness of a flange part, preventing distortion or torsion of the optical element, and holding the optical element in the element holding body highly precisely. SOLUTION: The optical element (an ultraviolet lens 2) provided with holding planes (2a1 and 2a2) is held in the element holding body (a lens holder 3) with a holding means 6. The holding means 6 has holding members (11 and 12) provided with engagement planes (11b and 12b) in the spherical parts (11a and 12a), and holding parts (a second level difference surface 5 and a holddown plate 8) disposed on the element holding body (a lens holder 3) side, which are provided with hole parts (first and second engagement holes 7 and 10).
