The apparatus has a supply storage (7) for a continuous stitching wire (4). A supply unit (6) is used for supplying the stitching wire from the supply storage to a stitching head (2) and for dividing the stitching wire into pieces. A sensor (13) e.g. differential transducer, is arranged for quantitative determination of a stitching wire amount that is available at the supply storage. A display device (14) is arranged for displaying a determined stitching wire quantity as number of pieces of stitching clips that are producible with the quantity.
