PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for producing a higher alcohol (e.g. 16-40C alcohol). SOLUTION: A method for purifying the higher alcohol (e.g. 16-40C alcohol) by distilling an animal and vegetable wax under a vacuum has been found out. It is particularly preferable that the method comprises a step of adding an aqueous solution of a hydroxide compound or an oxide compound of an alkali metal, a step of carrying out saponification and hydrolysis, to convert a free fatty acid to a metal salt of an alkaline earth metal compound, a step of distilling the reaction mixture under a vacuum or adding the aqueous solution of the hydroxide compound or the oxide compound of the alkali metal, a step of carrying out the saponification and hydrolysis, and a step of converting the resultant free fatty acid into a metal salt of a heavy metal compound, followed by distilling the reaction mixture under the vacuum.
