591974 An electrical lock 30 for use in securing a door, the electronic lock 30 comprising electronic fail safe mechanism 32 operable on opening means of the inside of the door to a secure premises, and electronic fail secure mechanism 34 operable on opening means 28 on the outside of the door to the secure premises, and an electronic controller responsive to electrical signals and adapted to supply power to the electronic fail safe and fail secure mechanisms. In the event of a loss of power to the electronic lock 30, the opening means of the electronic lock 30 can be used to open the door from the inside but not from the outside of the door. When power is being supplied to the electronic lock 30 the electronic controller supplies power to the electronic fail safe mechanism 32 and at the same time, does not supply power to the electronic fail secure mechanism 34 until the controller receives an electrical signal that causes the electronic controller to cut off power to the fail safe actuator and/or to supply power to the fail secure actuator, thereby allowing the door opening means 28 on the outside of the door to unsecure the lock so as to open the door.
