<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic material capable of easily forming a magnet having a small content of rare earth elements, sufficient magnetic characteristics, and a bulk shape, and to provide a magnet that uses the magnetic material. <P>SOLUTION: The magnetic material has: a main phase particle 2 made of an intermetallic compound that contains at least rare earth elements and has a CaCu<SB>5</SB>-type crystal structure; and a coating layer 4 that covers at least one portion of the periphery of the main phase particle 2 and uses Fe as the main component.
