PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which prevents a manuscript from being broken and jammed and so on and controls the reduction of the number of read sheets per unit time. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus controls a platen driving motor 15 so that timing to clean the reading face of a reading sensor 12 by a cleaning member 16 attached to a platen roller 25 is changed based on the detected information of an inclination detecting means to detect the inclination state of the manuscript.
