PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for diagnosing a commutator of a DC motor, capable of quantitatively diagnosing about an abnormality of the commutator in the axial direction. SOLUTION: A distance between a displacement measuring means 2 and the surface of the commutator 12 is measured by using a Y-axis laser beam L1 emitted from the displacement measuring means 2, and a movement amount of the displacement measuring means 2 in the axial direction of the commutator 12 is detected by using an X-axis laser beam L2 emitted from a position detecting means 8. Then, a displacement measurement signal S1 containing a measurement result of the distance between the displacement measuring means 2 and the surface of the commutator 12, and a movement amount detection signal S2 containing a measurement result of the movement amount of the displacement measuring means 2 in the axial direction of the commutator 12, are output to a surface shape diagnosing means 10. The surface shape of the commutator 12 is diagnosed based on the displacement measurement signal S1 which is output from the displacement measuring means 2, and the movement amount detection signal S2 which is output from the position detecting means 8.
