PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a dihydroxy aromatic compound at a satisfactorily high yield. SOLUTION: Disclosed is a method for producing a dihydroxy aromatic compound (such as resorcinol) which comprises a process of forming an oxidation reaction product containing a diisopropyl aromatic dihydroperoxide (such as 1,3-diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide) by causing a diisopropyl aromatic compound (such as 1,3-diisopropylbenzene) to react with molecular oxygen in a reaction liquid comprising an imide compound having an N-hydroxyimide group (such as N-hydroxyphthalimide) and a copper compound (such as a copper acetate), a process of removing copper from the above oxidation reaction product and the crude product containing copper derived from the above copper compound so that the copper concentration is decreased to 450 mol ppm or lower, and a process of forming a dihydroxy aromatic compound such as resorcinol from the above oxidation reaction product.
