PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle periphery monitoring device which reduces processing loads when retrieving and recognizing a monitoring object from photographed images. SOLUTION: The indicator of the monitoring object is retrieved from the photographed image of the vehicle periphery, and an area of a prescribed size including the indicator is extracted. At this time, when illuminance is insufficient at nighttime or the like, and the indicator of the monitoring object can not be extracted from the photographed image, near infrared light is projected by a near infrared floodlight and the indicator of the monitoring object is extracted from the photographed image of a near infrared light camera. When the indicator can not be extracted from the photographed image of the near infrared light camera due to the afternoon sun or a high beam, the near infrared floodlight is made to flicker and the indicator of the monitoring object is extracted from a difference image between the time of projecting the near infrared light and the time of putting it out (100-114). Then, the light distribution of a headlamp is controlled so as to irradiate a position corresponding to the extracted area with the light of the headlamp (116), also the contents of the indicator are recognized from the photographed image of the extracted area (118, 120) and a recognized result is reported to a crew (122).
